BFA (Hons) & BA (Hons) Programs

As a guide, the academic grade average required for admission to the Department of Dance in recent years has been in the high 70s/low 80s for high school students and mid 70s for university/college students.

What we’re looking for

Admission to the BFA and BA programs in Dance is based on your academic performance, as well as a supplementary evaluation, which includes a questionnaire and an audition. Previous training in contemporary/modern and/or ballet is highly recommended for the audition.

NOTE: Please do not send letters of reference. They are not a consideration for acceptance.

STEP 1: Apply to York University

Submit your application to the York University: Fine Arts - Dance program on the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) website.

The supplementary evaluation for our Dance (BFA & BA) programs includes an online questionnaire (step 2) that helps us learn about your academic and artistic background as well as specific interests and goals as they relate to our Dance programs, and an in-person on-campus audition (step 3).

We strongly encourage all our applicants to attend an in-person evaluation on campus as it offers you the most extensive and engaged experience.  However if you live more than 400km away from York University, or have other extenuating circumstances that preclude you from coming to campus, you may arrange a distance evaluation by contacting dance@yorku.ca BEFORE completing step 2. Please include your full name, York Reference Number and an explanation of your circumstances in the email.

Once you have completed Step 1 and received your York Reference Number from our Office of Admissions, we will send you an email with instructions supplementary evaluation.

The audition involves the learning and performance of movement sequences that use elements from contemporary/modern, contemporary ballet and a World Dance form, in a typical dance class setting with live musical accompaniment. There is also a guided group improvisation.

Dance faculty members evaluate audition performances as well as the written components from the supplementary evaluation.

Auditions begin in January and run through to April. Consider auditioning early (January / February) for possible early offer of admission.

NOTE: If distance or extenuating circumstances preclude an on-campus audition, please contact  dance@yorku.ca to arrange a distance evaluation.

Where to go

Auditions are held in the dance studios in the Accolade East Building (ACE) at York University's Keele campus. Check in at the Department of Dance, Suite 301 Accolade East Building .
