Admission to the Dance program is based on your academic performance, as well as a supplementary evaluation, which includes a questionnaire and an audition. Previous training in contemporary/modern and/or ballet is highly recommended for the audition.
STEP 1: Apply to York University
Submit your application to York University: School of Arts, Media, Performance & Design - Dance on the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) website. If you are not a current high school student, you may also be eligible to apply directly through the York University Office of Admissions.

STEP 2: Submit your Online Supplementary Evaluation Questionnaire
The supplementary evaluation for our Dance program includes an online questionnaire (Step 2) that helps us learn about your academic and artistic background, interests and goals as they relate to our Dance program, followed by an audition (Step 3).
Once you have completed Step 1 and have received your York Reference Number from the Office of Admissions, you may proceed to the Supplementary Evaluation website.

STEP 3: Audition
Your in-person, on-campus audition involves learning and performing movement sequences that use elements from contemporary/modern dance, contemporary ballet, and a world dance form, in a typical dance class setting with live musical accompaniment. There is also a guided group improvisation.
We strongly encourage you to do a live audition on campus as it offers you the most extensive and engaged experience. However, if you live more than 400km away from York University, or have other extenuating circumstances that preclude you from coming to campus, you will be able to upload your audition materials on our supplementary evaluation website.
Dance faculty members evaluate your audition performances as well as the written components from your supplementary evaluation.
Auditions begin in February. Consider auditioning early for a potential early offer of admission.
Where to go
Auditions are held in the dance studios in the Accolade East Building (ACE) at York University's Keele campus. Check in at room 244 in the Accolade East Building [map & directions].
Parking is available in the parking garage at the Bennett Centre for Student Services [map]. When you check in at the Department of Dance for your audition, you will receive a parking pass that will allow you to exit the parking lot without paying (single-use only).
What to bring
Be prepared for a full day –– bring a bag lunch, a water bottle, and a change of clothes. Also, bring a pen or pencil.
What to wear
Footless tights, leotard, ballet slippers (no pointe shoes, no bulky clothing). Please wear your dance clothes under your street clothes so that you can change quickly for the audition. A change room with showers is available once the audition is over.
9:15 - 9:45 Check in
For those auditioning, there will be a welcome and information meeting, guided warm up, formal audition comprising comtemporary ballet (30 minutes), contemporary modern (30 minutes), guided improvisation, and a comtemporary word dance form (30 minutes). Lunch with the Dance Student Association, a choreographic presentation with upper level students, Q & A and written reflection.
Auditioning applicants will be ready to leave for the day by 3:30pm.
Please note: Family members and friends are not permitted to observe the audition. Following the welcome and information session, family members and friends will be offered a tour of our dance facilities. After that, they are free to explore the campus.
