BFA (Hons) & BA (Hons) Programs

As a guide, the academic grade average required for admission to the Department of Dance in recent years has been in the high 70s/low 80s for high school students and mid 70s for university/college students.

What we’re looking for

Admission to the BFA and BA programs in Dance is based on your academic performance, as well as:

  • BFA - Successful completion of a supplementary application, which includes a questionnaire and an audition. Previous training in contemporary/modern and/or ballet is highly recommended for the audition.
  • BA - Applicants are invited to fill out a supplementary application outlining their dance background and interests.

NOTE: Admission to the BA Program is based solely on previous academic performance. Applicants are invited to complete the Supplementary Application and participate in the audition to get first-hand experience of Dance at York. Neither the Supplementary Application nor the audition will be evaluated for admission.

NOTE: Please do not send letters of reference. They are not a consideration for acceptance.

STEP 3: Auditioning

The audition involves the learning and performance of movement sequences that use elements from contemporary/modern, ballet and a World Dance form, in a typical dance class setting. Also included is a short written reflection component, to be completed following the dance audition. Dance faculty members evaluate audition performances as well as the written component. Auditions begin in January and run through to late April.

NOTE: If distance or extenuating circumstances preclude an on-campus audition, please see ' DVD Audition for the BFA in Dance'.
